Lauren Curtis: The surreal and the spiritual have always fascinated me and by using digital photo collage I can express these subjects in a way that is unique and tells a story while leaving some to the viewer's interpretation. Exploring topics like how nature is intertwined with spirituality, as well as interpretations of alternative lifestyles and ways of being, is important to me and this style of art allows me to best express myself.
Meg Boe Birns: This is an impasto, mixed-media paintings that feature a woman’s face and the surreal presence of mysterious birds that are as if spirit animals, or a manifestation of inner spirituality, or inner creatureliness, as if the birds and the person are incarnations of each other. One surreal aspect of this painting is that it was created in a way that can be compared to automatic writing. For most of the time, some Other Self was guiding the picture. I have named this painting after the name of a girl and the painting’s dominant color; I also feel that Saphirra looks back at me and is telling me her secret: that whoever tops to look at uncanny visage will find what Charles Baudelaire would call a semblable, a counterpart. She is just like you.
