Studied law, but turned to art encouraged by artist Ingres.
Studies one year at Ecole des Beaux-Arts then travels 3 years in Italy.
1868, becomes member of a group of avant-garde artists including Manet, Renoir, Monet and Sisley; 1873, helps form Society of Independent Artists.
