Read More Author's WebsiteThe mermaids can hear me singing
The waves grow still
I sing the song of their youngest sister
Too timid to embrace her nature
As a fantastical creature from the dark deep
She gave her heart because she wouldn't eat his
Lost to a mundane man
And her voice the cost of her whimsy.
Love is a flimsy defense
A mermaid without a murmur
Her desire stifled her
She envied his legs
And his valiant stride
Her envy, his pride
Neither had resilience
And her silence was meant to guide what?
He rejected her for another
And her heart stopped
Without a sound
Without a sigh.
I've seen this before in other times
Other lives
Here on the ocean floor
I sit with my familiars and
And sing the little one's song
Her sisters sing with me
I've eaten too many hearts
But my hunger never waivers
So I'll hum til the dark seeps
Under the waves
Singing for my supper.
